SHREK FOREVER AFTER slays at the weekend box office
The fourth SHREK feature, SHREK FOREVER AFTER, made over $71,250,000 million at the domestic box office this weekend. A big number. Yet, it doesn't seem that impressive when you do a little digging. Why? Well, if you compare that take with the opening weekends of the last two SHREK films, $71 million falls pretty short of what those two sequels made. As in its opening weekend SHREK THE THIRD had $121.6 million, and SHREK 2 made $108.
SHREK FOREVER AFTER's appearance knocked down the first and second place performers from last week to second and third (and in the same order). IRON MAN 2 really is number 2 this week making $26.6 million. ROBIN HOOD with an $18.7 million weekend is still looking up at IRON MAN 2 (and now SHREK FOREVER AFTER).
The SNL-based, R-rated comedy MACGRUBER did not have an explosive opening weekend with $4.1 million. But the film does have a relatively small budget of $10 million, so it still has a decent chance of at least surpassing budget.
KITES, which is an Indian film, had a strong first week at the American Box Office taking tenth place. It didn't break a million dollars with $952,000, but it was only playing on 208 screens, creating a $4,577 per screen average (the fourth best of the weekend).
SEX AND THE CITY 2 (which is getting released on Thursday instead of Friday) and PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME will be coming to the weekend box office party next. It seems likely to come down to shoes or daggers next week. And given the first SEX AND THE CITY made $57 million in its opening weekend, give me shoes as my pick.
