SMURFS production begins; cast gets more interesting
Principal photography on THE SMURFS began on March 26. I think a lot of us had a WTF moment when we heard that this film was going to be made but I have to say, the talent the project has attracted has really got me interested. I doubt I'll see this film in the theater, with 3D prices being what they are, but it will be on my home rental list for sure.
The film features Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, and Hank Azaria in live-action roles opposite the voice cast. Recent additions include: Anton Yelchin (Clumsy Smurf), Jonathan Winters (Papa Smurf), pop star Katy Perry (Smurfette), Alan Cumming (Gutsy Smurf), Fred Armisen (Brainy Smurf) and George Lopez (Grouchy Smurf).
Hank Azaria will play the Smurfs' nemesis, Gargamel. Harris and Mays play a couple whose lives are interrupted when the Smurfs cross over from their magical village to New York City. Vergara plays Odile, Harris's boss, a cosmetics executive.
Check out the official synopsis after the break.
When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours – in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.
The film is set for release August 3, 2011.
