With a recent rise in the quality of their output with such films as CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, Sony Pictures Animation has just nabbed the screen rights to yet another beloved children’s novel.

Deadline has revealed that the division will be producing an adaptation of the Janet Foxley novel, Muncle Trogg. The story follows a “fairytale community based inside a volcano, and hidden from humans.”

Michelle Raimo-Kouyate’s first acquisition since being named president of production at the division, it appears that the studio is quite excited about this project, with Raimo-Kouyate saying that “this would speak to the kinds of animated movies I want to make at Sony Pictures Animation.”

Personally, I’ve never read the book, so I can’t speak to the story itself, but if this is half as good as MEATBALLS, we are in for something special. The studio does have THE SMURFS hitting this summer, so not everything appears to be going swell over at Sony, but this one does sound like it could be a winner.
