Sony Pictures Classics nabs Michael Haneke’s AMOUR
If there is one major arthouse film slated for a 2012 release that intrigues this writer more than the upcoming return of director Michael Haneke, I haven’t heard about it. Entitled AMOUR, the film has been oft-rumored to make its debut at next month's Cannes Film Festival. And now, that doesn’t seem to be beyond the realm of possibility.
Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the rights to the upcoming film, a mere two days prior to the announcement of the full Cannes Film Festival lineup.
AMOUR, starring Isabelle Huppert, follows the story of a couple in their ‘80s, whose love is tested when the woman has some sort of "incident." The film co-stars Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva, and is easily one of this year’s most interesting pictures.
Personally, I find very few directors possess a voice as intriguing or interesting as Haneke's, in spite of how tough his films may be. He’s one of my favorite filmmakers and this premise sounds like a great, tiny, intimate film; something Haneke excels at. Can’t wait.
