I dream of Jeannie

Because you've been asking for it, Sony is yet again trying to get a theatrical version of I Dream Of Jeannie off the ground.  Yup, it appears no lessons were learned from that terrible Nora Ephron-directed BEWITCHED that starred Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, or all the hardships endured on the past attempts to make this bad idea happen.

The JEANNIE movie has been attempted many a time, but it always seems to fall apart for some reason or another.  Mainly it appears that the producers are struggling with how to update the series. Gasp!  But Sheila Callaghan, acclaimed playwright and a writer for United States of Tara, has been hired to write a new draft of the screenplay based on the 1960s television show and Nick at Night staple.

Callaghan's involvement does give me hope.  I've seen a few episodes of United States of Tara and I've liked what I've seen, though I'm not sure how much of that has to do with the writing as opposed to Toni Collette's acting.  Callaghan has also won recogintion as a playwright, having penend Dead City, a retelling of James Joyce's Ulysses as well as other works.

If you think about the premise of I Dream of Jeannie, it is easy to see why one would have a hard time updating the story.  It's a feminist's nightmare.  A man keeps a woman in a bottle, only to call on her when he needs a favor and she is only so happy to oblige her master.  Yuck.  Though if done correctly this could have some LEGALLY BLONDE or SPLASH like potential.  A woman finds her worth and all that jazz or a fish out of water tale.  I'm kind of curious to see how this all will play out...kinda.
