Sounding Off: Burwell to finish what he started; composing BREAKING DAWN

The one thing that has stayed consistent throughout the three installments of the TWILIGHT saga so far (TWILIGHT, NEW MOON, and ECLIPSE) has been the principal cast (way to hang in there, Taylor) while the directors (Catherine Hardwicke, Chris Weitz, and David Slade) and composers (Carter Burwell, Alexandre Desplat, and Howard Shore) have changed as the story has evolved.

As the final segment of the series, BREAKING DAWN, is officially in production, it has been announced that Carter Burwell will be returning to the series to compose the score for the final two films (BREAKING DAWN PART 1 and 2).

I became a fan of Burwell’s work after seeing TWILIGHT and it was due largely in part of the score he created for that film that I became a fan of the series. One of the most highly anticipated moments in the first TWILIGHT film was the revealing of “Bella’s Lullaby” as written for her by vampire love Edward (Robert Pattinson). Burwell created what became the underlying theme of the first film that carried through each the segments that followed, despite the fact that Burwell himself was not the composer on those films.

Both Desplat and Shore are amazing composers in their own right and created beautiful scores for both NEW MOON and ECLIPSE respectively, but I always felt Burwell was the heart the world of TWILIGHT and I am excited to have him back to complete the story.

i totally agree with you. Burwell created a distinctive and haunting score. I love Desplat (especially his gorgeous score for The Painted Veil) but both he and Shore’s scores for the next two movies were not memorable. I missed Burwell during both movies. I hadn’t heard yet that Burwell was back and better yet for both movies!! This is good news.

Yes – while I love both Desplat and Shore’s work, I really felt that Burwell captured the spirit of Twilight. This may be simply because he came first, but the music he created always made the music on that film stand out to me more than the others. Glad to hear you’re looking forward to hearing him continue what he started as well!

I actually think it wasn’t because he came first. I feel that his music was better for the film because it was more unusual. When I saw New Moon, afterward I kept trying to remember the music. I couldn’t. So I returned to see it again because after The Painted Veil, I was so excited to hear how Desplat would compose with Burwell’s music in mind. After seeing the movie again, I couldn’t remember anything distinctive about it. I was so disappointed. By the time Eclipse came out I didn’t give
the music much thought and once again, I couldn’t remember it! I think you are right that Burwell caught the spirit of it and it is simply the best because of that. It feels like a new lease on the Twilight music!
