There are few films I am anticipating in the coming months more than Sofia Coppola's SOMEWHERE. To ramp up my anticipation still more, today I've got soundtrack information from the film to share with all you other Coppola-ites. The soundtrack features the previously-announced inclusion of some Phoenix songs – wholly unsurprising, given that Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars is the father of Coppola’s two children. Air, which frequently appears on Coppola soundtracks, is absent from this round, with room given to such mixed artists as The Police, Gwen Stefani, and T. Rex.

Music has played a huge part in all of Coppola’s films, so the announcement of a soundtrack listing for SOMEWHERE isn’t just some bit of marketing – it should give fans of the filmmaker a real sense of the direction and general feeling we will encounter in the film, starring Stephen Dorff as a washed-up Hollywood actor biding his time in LA’s own Chateau Marmont hotel, until the appearance of his young daughter (Elle Fanning) turns his entire life upside down.

Coppola’s MARIE ANTOINETTE was wildly influenced by her use of modern music within it – it drove both the action and the emotion of the film. That soundtrack, an epic two-disc set, featured the likes of Aphex Twin, Air, Bow Wow Wow, and The Cure. My favorite of Coppola’s works, LOST IN TRANSLATION, benefited from an extremely strong soundtrack – I still cannot hear “Just Like Honey” by the Jesus and Mary Chain without feeling as if I’m back in the theater, savoring the film. Even her adaptation of THE VIRGIN SUICIDES featured songs specifically named in Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel, while mixing in modern works by such outstanding bands as Canada’s own Sloan.
