The POST GRAD soundtrack follows the typical template of grouping together contemporary songs, while highlighting a handful of well-known artists such as Lily Allen and Gym Class Heroes. Luckily the Top 40 chart wasn’t simply just mined for this one - the tracks do keep the light, funny tone of the film, but when you listen to the lyrics, they also mirror the themes and plot of the story. The songs work well together and do not sound mismatched – a feat for any album of this nature.

I will admit the song I liked most in connection with this movie was featured only in the trailer and not on the soundtrack (“Show Me What I’m Looking For” by Carolina Liar), but I do realize this was the “go-to” song for a lot of television shows over the past few months, so it would probably be difficult for one film to stake claim on it.

Other than the few scored tracks by composer Christophe Beck (THE HANGOVER), the only track written specifically for POST GRAD is the song “Turn Back Around” by Lucy Schwartz. I really enjoyed this track from the up-and-coming singer/songwriter because it added a touch of jazz to a mainly pop album.

Another highlight track for me was Joshua Radin’s “Brand New Day” – he contributed some of my favorite songs to THE LAST KISS soundtrack a few years back and  it turned me into a fan. The track from Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene) was probably my favorite and it made me want to hear more of his solo efforts – a sign of success for any song on a soundtrack album.

If you dig any of these artists, you’ll probably like most of the other offerings on the soundtrack.  The tracks are fun and light-hearted, making this just the type of compilation you would want to listen to when driving around on a lazy summer day with the windows down.
