It’s been a minute since we’ve seen director Spike Lee behind the camera, but it’s been even longer since we’ve seen actor Spike Lee in front of it. However, that will thankfully be changing, and in a big way.

Blackfilm is reporting (via Shadow And Act) that Lee will not only have a role in his new film, RED HOOK SUMMER, but he’ll be bringing back his iconic character of Mookie for the upcoming film. Apparently, Lee found some sort of funding for a new project, despite telling outlets that financing has been almost impossible to come by, and the film is already shooting as of today (at least according to Lee’s Twitter).

The film will follow the story of an adult’s summer in the titular neighborhood, and with the news of the addition of Mookie, it sounds like it’s some sort of prequel/sequel/spin-off to Lee’s masterpiece, DO THE RIGHT THING.

As a fan of DO THE RIGHT THING, this couldn’t be better news. Not only is Lee a fantastic director, but he’s actually also a really entertaining on-screen presence. Mookie is an amazing character, and one that I’m really stoked to see hop back on the big screen.
