In a slew of April Fools news, this is a promising find. Stepen Daldry (THE READER, BILLY ELLIOT) has just been announced as the director for a screen adaptation of EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE, the critically acclaimed novel by Jonathan Safran Foer. According to THR, Daldry is delighted to have scored the project, as he has a particular fondness for literary adaptation. Here’s a small fraction of the praise for the book by Publisher’s Weekly:

Oskar Schell, hero of this brilliant follow-up to Foer’s bestselling Everything Is Illuminated, is a nine-year-old amateur inventor, jewelry designer, astrophysicist, tambourine player and pacifist. Like the second-language narrator of Illuminated, Oskar turns his naïvely precocious vocabulary to the understanding of historical tragedy, as he searches New York for the lock that matches a mysterious key left by his father when he was killed in the September 11 attacks, a quest that intertwines with the story of his grandparents, whose lives were blighted by the firebombing of Dresden.

Also attached to the project is Scott Rudin as producer and Eric Roth as screenwriter. Also reporting the story is Slash Film’s Russ Fischer who brings up an excellent point on Eric Roth as screenwriter. In his own words, “He’s got a knack for character, but doesn’t always nail structure”. Definitely a legitimate concern.

What say you, readers? I know the novel has a good sized fan base. Are fans scared or stoked for the on screen adaptation?
