To the surprise of no one, it appears as though actor Steve Carell is going to have one hell of a career after the end of his run as the lead on the hit TV series, The Office.

With his run coming to a close, Deadline is reporting that the actor will next be seen in the film SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD.

To be directed by writer Lorene Scafaria, Keira Knightley is currently in talks to join the film as well.  According to the report, the film will take place “at a time when a giant asteroid heads toward earth, almost certain to destroy the planet. Carell plays a man suddenly alone when his wife leaves. His high school sweetheart writes him saying she wants to be with him when the world stops. His neighbor (Knightley) accompanies him on the road trip as love blooms at the worst possible time.”

Scafaria has penned the screenplays to such films as the rather wonderful NICK AND NORA’S INFINITE PLAYLIST, and will mark her directorial debut with this project.  The film will be produced by Anonymous Content, Indian Paintbrush and Mandate, with Paramount getting distribution rights to the project.

Personally, I love this news.  The combination of Carell and Knightely is a really compelling one, one that reminds me an awful lot of Carell and Juliette Binoche in DAN IN REAL LIFE.  The premise is quite interesting as well, so it appears as though Carell may have quite a post-Office career.
