Steve Martin to join THE BIG YEAR

I'm a huge comedy fan and Steve Martin is one of my comedy heroes. On Sunday as he hosted the Oscars with Alec Baldwin he reminded me of how funny he can be. Lately it seems like he's busy doing random cameos and PINK PANTHER movies rather than really funny stuff.

THE BIG YEAR might mark a positive change in his current movie career. Martin is in negotiations to star in the FOX 2000 comedy, taking over for Dustin Hoffman, who was previously attached to the project. He would be teaming up with Jack Black and Owen Wilson for the film, which sounds like a really solid comedy lineup to me!

THE BIG YEAR is based on the 1998 book, The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession. The term "the big year" is used by birdwatchers to refer to a year-long contest in which they attempt to outdo each other by seeing who can spot the most birds. This is exactly what happens in the film, as three guys (presumably Martin, Black and Wilson) spend a year trying to outdo one another. Their competition serves as an "allegory for the challenges each faces in his own life."

David Frankel, who last teamed up with Wilson in MARLEY AND ME, will be directing.
