Summit looking to Oscar nominees for THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN directing job

If there is one thing that Summit Entertainment has done for their bread winner, the TWILIGHT franchise, it’s that they have given the projects the utmost stellar of directing talent.

Starting with Catherine Hardwicke for TWILIGHT, and then moving to Chris Weitz and David Slade for NEW MOON and ECLIPSE respectively. For their two part finale, BREAKING DAWN, EW is reporting that the crew at Summit are looking to up the ante even more.

Sources have told the outlet that the studio has reached out to at least three filmmakers; Sofia Coppola, Gus Van Sant, and Bill Condon, to see just how interested these Oscar nominees would be to hop in the director’s chair for the film. Van Sant has confirmed the report, but the other two directors haven’t confirmed as of yet.

No other information has been given, as writer Melissa Rosenberg hasn’t handed in an outline for the film yet, but reportedly should by this time next week.

Personally, while all three are talented filmmakers, I wouldn’t get my hopes up.  Gus Van Sant has a rather full slate with the film RESTLESS and his upcoming THE ELECTRIC KOOL-AID ACID TEST all waiting somewhere in the pipe, and Sofia Coppola has not only a film coming out this fall, but a baby coming sometime in May.  Condon also has a Richard Pryor biopic shooting this fall, but that isn’t the biggest hurdle, as I’m sure the insane money he would get would easily draw him from that film.  I wouldn’t throw these names into the pile of simply dreams, but for Van Sant and Coppola, it just seems out of character.  Condon is a likely pick, and with the film set to get into production rather quickly, I wouldn’t doubt news on this in the coming weeks.

They want to reach critical acclaim with the adaptation of a book from the Twilight series? The only way that could be done is if they threw the book away and just wrote another vampire story. A good vampire story.
