Sometimes we get what we ask for. When we do, we can only hope that it is as perfect as we imagined. It might have been tongue-in-cheek a few years ago when I suggested that Kevin Spacey had an unfinished "Office Trilogy" that began with GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS in 1992 and was followed by SWIMMING WITH THE SHARKS in 1995. This figment of my hypothetical nature may very well come to fruition at the Sundance Film Festival next month when Kevin Spacey will be part of an ensemble cast in MARGIN CALL, which chronicles the final twenty-four hours of Lehman Brothers.

This film, which is based on true events, has a lot going for it. First off, the screenplay was named on this year's Black List, which names the top unproduced screenplays making the rounds in Hollywood. Also, the cast is eye-popping, featuring two Academy Award winners, Spacey and Jeremy Irons, Academy Award nominee, Stanley Tucci, as well as Demi Moore, Zachary Quinto, and Paul Bettany. It appears that J.C. Chandor may have caught lightning in a bottle with his first full-length script. It was good enough for him to convince this cast to join on for his directorial debut.

In light of the recent economical crisis that the country experienced, it seems only natural that a solid film on the finance industry should emerge. This is something that WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS did not satisfy for me. It is yet to be seen whether this film is all that I hope it is, but Kevin Spacey in an office has been a formula for success in the past.

Official synopsis:
Set in the high-stakes world of the financial industry, Margin Callis a thriller entangling the key players at an investment firm during one perilous 24-hour period in the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis. When entry-level analyst Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto) unlocks information that could prove to be the downfall of the firm, a roller-coaster ride ensues as decisions both financial and moral catapult the lives of all involved to the brink of disaster. Expanding the parameters of genre, Margin Call is a riveting examination of the human components of a subject too often relegated to partisan issues of black and white.
Propelled by a stellar cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci, and Demi Moore, writer/director JC Chandor’s enthralling first feature is a stark and bravely authentic portrayal of the financial industry and its denizens as they confront the decisions that shape our global future.
