Super Bowl 2011: your complete movie trailer round-up
Well, well, well, it’s that time of year again.
Most of the pop culture side of the world’s focus has shifted to Texas this weekend, with the 2011 Super Bowl now upon us. Pitting the Green Bay Packers against the steel curtain that is the Pittsburgh Steelers, not only should the game itself kick major amounts of ass, but we are in for one hell of a collection of film-related television spots.
Featuring tiny neo-trailers for the likes of SUPER 8, THOR, RANGO, KUNG FU PANDA: THE KABOOM OF DOOM, COWBOYS AND ALIENS, and PIRATES OF THE CARRIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, the game will also bring us our first look at the upcoming Marvel film, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, as well as another, hopefully more interesting view of TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON. A murderer’s row of big budget blockbusters, stay tuned here for updates as to what is available to view online, as soon as they go up.
Here is what is available at this moment:
Thoughts: Still not at all sold on the film. Does have an interesting cast (Jesse Eisenberg is always fun), but the film just screams mediocrity. This spot definitely doesn’t help.
Thoughts: Looks quite solid. Again, still not quite sold on the film as a whole, but I do love the premise, and every bit of footage that we’ve seen so far
DRIVE ANGRY 3D
Thoughts: Looks like a ton of fun. I’m always down for some B-movie thriller, and during the February doldrums may be the best time for that very thing. Not much new here, but it does look like a ton of fun.
KUNG FU PANDA 2
Thoughts: The epitome of uninspired. Limp gags abound here, a spot that just really doesn’t work. Not one bit.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES (sneak peek, full spot coming soon)
Thoughts: Looks fun, but then again, this trailer features absolutely nothing new. Not bad, but not interesting either
Grade: N/A (nothing new)
Thoughts: Have no idea what to make of this film, but then again, that’s why I think this absolutely kills. I love this spot, and every ounce of footage we’ve seen so far. Count me more than in.
COWBOYS AND ALIENS
Thoughts: Simple math. Director Of IRON MAN + Aliens + the Western genre = Awesome. This spot proves it.
TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT
Thoughts: Delays be damned, this film looks fun. Still want more to be proved it’s not just selling us on all of the film’s funny beats.
BATTLE: LOS ANGELES
Thoughts: There have been a ton of alien films either released or put into production recently, and I really think this may be the best. It sure as hell looks that way at least.
Thoughts: Looks like a garbage comic book adaptation. Likely what it will ultimately be.
JUST GO WITH IT
Thoughts: Really interesting spot. Not based on what it showed, but how it showed it. So much misogyny. Weird.
Grade: Kind of offensive
Thoughts: Fast cars. The Rock. Hot women. The Rock. The Rock. Looks like a bunch of fun. Not anything I’ll see, but it looks fun.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
(First look at Red Skull for your enjoyment. Bask in its brilliance) (via Firstshowing)
Thoughts: The one trailer from the night that everyone had been waiting for and it delivers. I’m not going to say much, but despite a few slight beats that I don’t really care for, from the look of the film, to the reveal of Red Skull, this spot absolutely kills. Check it out!
TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON
Thoughts: Bay had a lot riding on this spot, particularly after giving us not only a horrible TRANSFORMERS 2, but a really fun, but uninteresting teaser for TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON, and he knocked it out. Now, we got a great spot for T2, and while that film ultimately failed on a massive scale, this one does look to feature a lot of robots fighting, and Earth just being destroyed. What more could you want from a Michael Bay film?
Thoughts: The night’s best trailer. Directed by JJ Abrams, SUPER 8 oozes the style of a CLOSE ENCOUNTERS era Steven Spielberg, and sells it absolutely perfect. I love this spot, and while we still don’t know a damn thing about the film, it has quickly become the talk of the web after this fantastic spot hit. Simply put, I can’t wait.
Thoughts: One of the night’s big set pieces, and it does show a film that looks really fun. That said, save for one or two beats, there isn’t much new here. The film itself looks really fun, and with a Shakespearean style narrative like Thor is I’ll trust director Kenneth Branagh, but this doesn’t do anything really. Remarkably unremarkable.
THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU
Thoughts: Again, one of the many trailers that just don’t show much new. I’m really excited for the film, but as far as spots go, this one does nothing to effect my outlook on the film. Looks really great though, if a bit cliche
