With THE AVENGERS taking home over $700 million worldwide since it launched, this week has brought an onslaught of superhero news, so let’s jump right into it.
First up, Disney head Bob Iger went out of his way to shock the world, announcing that AVENGERS 2 is actually in development. I know, he really went out on a limb, but it’s good to finally know. Okay, all joking aside, it is nice to know that while we’ve all assumed it, Marvel and Disney don’t appear to be resting on their laurels. Obviously, the first AVENGERS film hints at a much more interesting universe building than originally thought, and with films like ANT-MAN and DOCTOR STRANGE on the horizon, things are definitely looking to broaden on the Marvel feature film front.
Marvel’s next film, IRON MAN 3, just got a whole lot more interesting, as Variety reports that Rebecca Hall has joined the cast of the upcoming film. Shane Black will helm the film from a script he also co-wrote, and the film will find Hall playing Maya Hansen, a fellow scientist of Guy Pearce’s character, Tristian Aldrich, who creates a virus entitled Extremis. Following the Warren Ellis storyline of the same name, this will be one of the most intriguing comic book movies in quite some time, as it will be the first step towards the new AVENGERS sequel.
Finally, KICK-ASS 2 is coming at us. Deadline is reporting that the original film’s cast is eyeing a return here, with director Jeff Wadlow aboard to direct. And that’s the sound of my fleeting interest. I honestly didn’t like the original film, and with the guy behind NEVER BACK DOWN set to helm, consider my interest in this project almost non-existent.
