Back in January, I fell hard for Miranda July's second feature, THE FUTURE, at Sundance. A relationship drama with a sci-fi bent, THE FUTURE is hard to accurately explain in just words - it's charming and confounding, beautiful and sad, emotional and very intellectual. It was my favorite film of Sundance, and I was excited for the entire FUTURE team when it was picked to also show at this year's SXSW. Any opportunity for more people to see the film sounded good to me.

At SXSW, I got a chance to sit down with July, who wrote, directed, and starred in the film, to talk about a number of FUTURE topics I had burning questions about. After the break, check out her responses to how to create a film that's both sci-fi-inflected and deeply heartfelt, the casting of Hamish Linklater as her boyfriend, how the film changed in production, and what it's like to see your film in a festival environment (including a fun anecdote about a screening in Berlin).
