Nicolas Winding Refn

After winning the award for Best Director at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his latest effort, DRIVE (a much deserved win if you ask me, read our review here), the official synopsis for director Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming film ONLY GOD FORGIVES has been released, and it definitely sounds interesting.

Starring the crew of Luke Evans, Kristin Scott Thomas, Vithaya Pansringarm and Yaya Ying, the film has been long talked about as Refn’s take on the sport of boxing, following a Thai cop who takes revenge on a gangster in a Thai boxing match.  And thanks to the Danish Film Institute (via Twitch) we now know that is exactly what it will follow.

Julian is on the run from the British police. He runs a Thai Boxing club in Bangkok which is a front for a drugs smuggling operation. He is well respected within the criminal underworld, but deep in his heart he feels that his life is lacking something. He meets a retired cop, The Angel of Vengeance, and finds out that he has to confront his mother.

As a huge fan of all of Refn’s films, particularly his last two VALHALLA RISING and DRIVE (as well as his PUSHER trilogy, one of cinema’s best trilogies), this film sounds like it will be the brutal fight film that Refn needs to be making.  The cast sounds interesting for sure, so when you toss in Refn’s directorial style and this narrative, of which both meld together so perfectly, this is one film I can’t wait to check out.
