No, Mel Gibson has not been arrested. At least not up to the point that I have written that sentence. Regardless of that fact, the famed and extremely talented man that does it all is headed to a prison. Which prison? He is going to an old and foreign prison, tucked away in a familiar place for him; the still-in-use Ignacio Allende Prison in Veracruz, Mexico. I say the place is familiar because some of the shooting on Gibson's last directorial effort, APOCALYPTO, was done there.
So, how did we find out about this project in the first place? Mel Gibson is one of the best in/out of Hollywood at keeping his projects completely under wraps. I mean, it was almost impossible for reporters to learn anything about APOCALYPTO, and even after they learned bits, nothing that solid was revealed until the trailer popped up. Well, this time we have been fortunate enough that an insider has spoken up. The Governor of Veracruz, Fidel Herrera, is currently exclaiming to all that will hear that a “grand production” is going to soon take place at the Ignacio Allende Prison, and Mel Gibson and company are the folks behind it all.
So, we know that Gibson is shooting a film at a historical prison in Veracruz, Mexico, but what could the film be about? Unfortunately, the governor isn't spilling the beans on that information, as of yet. But, with a little detective work, and the help of the handy dandy internet, maybe we can find a lead. Maybe. Many of you probably have no idea who those two men are that made their way into my news post title. Well, you might not know them, but I am positive you know some of the projects that they helped bring to fruition in the past. Peter Briggs, co-writer of the awesome supernatural comic adaptation, HELLBOY, and Jim Jacks, the producer behind the MUMMY franchise, THE JACKAL, and THE VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED, have teamed up to bring the world a fascinating supernatural action thriller titled MORTIS REX. Anticipation is slowly building for Jon Favreau's second run at the IRON MAN franchise. The first one blew up theaters and blew away audiences and critics alike. This is why I have been devouring any news snippets that have surfaced concerning the sequel. Fortunately, Favreau recently gave out some news goodies while talking at a COUPLES RETREAT junket in Bora Bora, and let us in on the decision process they go through for cameos (like Hulk, Captain America, etc.). The guy who did it all for the nookie is now doing it all for Andrew Kevin Walker. Walker, the man who wrote the fantastic thriller SE7EN, has written a new killer script that none other than Limp Bizkit singer Fred Durst will be directing. Durst the director, has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? That's because his film directorial debut, THE EDUCATION OF CHARLIE BANKS, is finally hitting theaters (limited) tomorrow.
"I'm going to direct PSYCHO KILLER. He (Andrew Kevin Walker) wrote SE7EN (which) David Fincher directed. I'm very excited about it. It's not a throwaway slasher genre film. It's a very smart, really compelling story about a serial killer on a mission for Satan. It's really interesting and the way it's written -- it's so unique. Andy is an incredible writer. It looks like we're going to go into preproduction around August."
Mike White, the funny-man who penned the scripts for two of Jack Black's best movies, SCHOOL OF ROCK and NACHO LIBRE, has announced that he is going to be in the next season of THE AMAZING RACE. THE AMAZING RACE is one of this country's top television shows. When I watch it I am always extremely jealous of the contestant's abilities to visit countless countries and cultures while competing in a challenge-filled race. I never thought I would see anyone with White's resume competing on the show without the show being a specific celebrity season, but I think it is a smart move by White and the show. Mike White will be given the opportunity to make once-in-a-lifetime memories with his partner who just so happens to be his Hollywood writer/director father, Mel White. I'm not sure this will raise viewership for THE AMAZING RACE, but I for one will be interested in seeing the White boys in action. Look for season 14 to premiere on CBS February 15th at 8PM Texas-time.
Craig Brewer, director of dramas HUSTLE AND FLOW and BLACK SNAKE MOAN, has signed on to write and direct MOTHER TRUCKER. MOTHER TRUCKER is described as an action comedy in the vein of SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT, oh and with an 18 wheeler! The story is about a convict who escapes from jail in order to see his dying mother one last time before she passes. Jailbreaks, old ladies dying, sounds like comedic gold! I am very interested to see how Brewer does when it comes to comedy. I loved HUSTLE AND FLOW, and I hope this one comes out just as good.
28 DAYS LATER and 28 WEEKS LATER were absolutely awesome movies in my personal opinion. I loved the layers that can be found within, and I simply love the good scares. This is why I am excited to hear Danny has spoken out about continuing this great horror franchise. Here's what he had to say:
"I’ve got an idea for it, so I can’t really tell you any more than that at the moment, but hopefully that might happen."
Not only does Danny have an idea for the film, but he also is expressing interest in directing once again!
"I'd certainly like to…I feel the idea is quite a strong idea, and it could well involve directing it. Yeah, absolutely."
So let's all cross our fingers and hope that Danny will give us more of his diseased angry people ravaging on humanity! In the mean time go see Danny Boyle's latest SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE when it hits theaters.
