Casting: Amber Heard in MACHETE KILLS; Sharlto Copley adds another film to his slate, Tarzan & Jane news

With the likes of Mel Gibson and Demian Bichir now joining the ranks of the pending MACHETE KILLS, the film just got even more intriguing, if you are a fan of A-list actresses.

Variety reports that Amber Heard has joined the cast of the upcoming film, which will find the team of Danny Trejo and director Robert Rodriguez returning for this project. The film will follow Machete as he is hired to take out an arms dealer, played by Gibson, who fully intends on launching a missile in the hopes of starting a world war. Personally, while I’m not a massive fan of Heard as an actress, I really do think that this is a role that fits her well. She’ll play an assassin, and the idea of her heading back to genre films is really great.

Well Damn: WB holding off on Mel Gibson’s new epic; script issues at fault

Dammit. Say what you will about Mel Gibson as a man and human being, but the guy can flat out direct the hell out of a motion picture. However, it appears as though even he can’t get over a poor script.

According to The Wrap, WB is holding off on starting up his next film, an epic penned by Joe Eszterhas which would follow the story of Maccabee, “whose victory over Greek and Syrian armies is celebrated at Hanukkah.” Maccabee led a revolt against the Greeks in the 2nd Century BC, and was set to be the focus on this project, until WB bailed due to the lack of “a sense of triumph.”

New trailer for Mel Gibson’s GET THE GRINGO

With the strum of a Spanish guitar, the latest trailer for the Mel Gibson action vehicle GET THE GRINGO begins, and although it's slightly derivative of films like DESPERADO, seeing Gibson in this role should make it easier to welcome him back to the big screen. Although, this won't be seen at your local theater. GET THE GRINGO is set to debut through DirecTV on May 1st, eventually landing on Blu-ray, VOD, and digital download.

The film is still set to have a very limited theatrical run, however, with a special screening in Austin, TX with Gibson in attendance. When Gibson screened a rough cut of APOCALYPTO at Fantastic Fest back in 2006, I was present when Gibson came out after the film to do a Q&A. This was mere months after his highly publicized arrest, but the film was so powerful that I highly doubt anyone was actually thinking about that incident and not the exhilarating film we had just watched. Hopefully, GET THE GRINGO will have the same effect on audiences.

Check out the trailer after the break.

SXSW 2011 Review: THE BEAVER

Editor's note: This review was originally posted as a SXSW Film Festival review on March 17, 2011.

Rating: 3/5

Writer: Kyle Killen
Director: Jodie Foster
Cast: Mel GibsonJodie FosterAnton YelchinJennifer LawrenceRiley Thomas Stewart
Studio: Summit Entertainment

It seems that living the American dream comes with pitfalls we do not normally see coming or talk about. Having a family, a successful career, and the impression of the “perfect” life seems to turn from something to revel in and become more of a box that imprisons you.

THE BEAVER delves into the crumbling world of a man who seemed to “have it all” and then decides to check out of his life, unable to do more than sleep his days away. Despite his physical presence, he is emotionally absent and his wife, Meredith (Jodie Foster), finally throws him out of the house. Walter (Mel Gibson) finds himself holed up in a hotel room with a bottle of liquor, his issues, and a beaver puppet he came across earlier in the night. Continue reading

Jodie Foster’s THE BEAVER delayed till May

Jodie Foster's beleaguered THE BEAVER is seeing yet another release date change. The Mel Gibson-starrer will now open in limited release on May 6, expanding wide on May 20. The film was previously slated for a March 23 release.

The move is being attributed to something positive, however, which is nice to see, as so often release date changes are blamed on bad buzz. The film is reportedly sliding to May for "better cast availability," particularly in relation to director and co-star Foster's schedule. The film also expects to have "a positive critical response following the SXSW Film Festival where it will be shown on March 16th," (hopefully) good buzz that Summit wants to capitalize on. Release date solidified for Jodie Foster’s THE BEAVER

Jodie Foster had to know that the jokes were going to write themselves when she decided to direct a film called THE BEAVER. Then she either decided to go for the gusto in The Tonight Show monologue department, or she figured she would shift the wisecracks onto someone else when she opted for Mel Gibson to be the lead man.

Either way, Summit Entertainment has announced that a firm release date for THE BEAVER has been set. It will be in limited release on March 23, 2011 and will expand to wide release on April 8, 2011. Continue reading

First Trailer: THE BEAVER

Beaver in the shower

Mel Gibson's one classy dude. I always imagine Gibson wearing some Dorito-stained sweat pants while he sits in the dark and whiskey-dials his exes, all the while doing his best Christian Bale Batman voice. Cla-a-a-ssy. But despite my loving eye for Gibson's inherent charm, the public seems to have dragged him through the mud. With is recent shunning from THE HANGOVER 2 Gibson is at a career low-point. However, Jodie Foster's BEAVER may just save Mel Gibson's life.

Talk about THE BEAVER has been bubbling about the film community for quite some time now and it's nothing short of positive. The film had been pulled from the slate after Gibson's shenanigans but now the release is back on track and we've got the first trailer. Here it is, THE BEAVER... Continue reading

Mel Gibson gets a release date for THE BEAVER; trailer to hit this Friday

Is the TREE OF LIFE trailer not really making your Friday all that anticipatory? How about some Mel Gibson?

According to Deadline, not only is Summit Entertainment looking to release the troubled thespian’s next film, the Jodie Foster-directed film THE BEAVER, in the spring of 2011, but the outlet is also reporting that on Friday’s edition of Entertainment Tonight, a trailer for the film will drop.

Earlier in the week, we discovered that Fox Searchlight will be attaching the first trailer for TREE OF LIFE to prints of BLACK SWAN, and while this film is in no way nearly as anticipated as TREE, it definitely does sound like a rather compelling film. Continue reading

Mel Gibson rumored for cameo in THE HANGOVER 2. Irony ensues.

Mel Gibson and a hangover, two things that are quite synonymous with one another. The New York Post, as credible a source as they are, is reporting that the BRAVEHEART actor/director has a cameo in the upcoming sequel to Todd Phillips' 2009 hit comedy. According to their source "It's a done deal. Mel will make a cameo as a tattoo artist. Filming is taking place on the Warner Bros. lot, where a Bangkok set has been built, and Mel is expected to film his role in two weeks. Then the production moves to Thailand at the end of October."

Aside from being an Oscar winning-director and iconic actor, Gibson has not exactly been recognized recently for his talent. Rather, allegations of latent racism and physical/verbal assault against his ex-girlfriend have soiled his name in the presses. Not to mention that whole DUI incident in 2006. Continue reading
