Take a bite out of this first look at Emily Hagins’ MY SUCKY TEEN ROMANCE!
What happens in world that feasts on pop culture and vampire lore, from TWILIGHT to TRUE BLOOD to Buffy? Specifically, what's that like for the actual vampires that inhabit this society? Well, I'd say it would be pretty easy for them to blend in at places like Hot Topic...maybe even comic book and genre conventions? At least that's the world that MY SUCKY TEEN ROMANCE proposes, the latest effort from teenage auteur - and Gordon and the Whale bestie - Emily Hagins.
You may remember hearing of Miss Hagins last year, when the festival favorite documentary ZOMBIE GIRL: THE MOVIE was a making the rounds - chronicling the trials and tribulations of the then 12-year-old aspiring filmmaker as she set out to make her first full-length feature, an ambitious zombie flick entitled PATHOGEN. You may also remember Emily writing an awesome guest review for us around this time last year for George Romero's SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD (which I suggest you check out HERE)!
Now at the ripe young age of 17, with three features under her studded belt, a slightly bigger budget (which she raised herself through donations), and a little help from a few friends in the business including make-up FX artist Doug Field (ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE, MACHETE), Emily has traded the flesh eating undead for the blood sucking kind with MY SUCKY TEEN ROMANCE. The film, which Emily wrote and directed, sees real life vampires attempting to blend in with reel life vampires (I.E. - kids in vampire cosplay) at a sci-fi convention so that they may hunt the unassuming fanboys and girls. Think wolves in sheep's clothing...with the sheep being pale and covered in glitter so they sparkle in the sun.
Check out the impressive first look at the film after the jump, along with the official synopsis, and a few words about MY SUCKY TEEN ROMANCE from Emily herself!
Here's what Emily had to say about the film, which currently has production underway in her hometown of Austin:
“I want the characters to be real geeks– they know about Twilight and the teen vampire phenomenon. But these vampires are the real deal, and more than everyday teenagers can take on. The comedy comes from the awkwardness of regular kids dealing with monsters who have been over-romanticized in recent pop culture,” says Hagins. “This is a teen comedy written, directed, and acted by teenagers. It is a unique opportunity to capture the genuine teen experience.”
Plot: In a culture that is currently overrun with romanticized vampires, it is up to four geeky teenagers to defend their friend and beloved sci-fi convention from a group of very real, and very blood-thirsty vampires.
Official Synopsis: On 17-year-old Kate’s last weekend in town, she and her friends plan to spend it together at SpaceCON– the local science fiction convention they attend every year. At the convention Kate meets Paul, a recently turned teen-vampire (who is also dressed as one). But when Kate tries to make a move on him, he accidentally bites her in the neck. Kate and her friends soon discover Paul is not the only vampire at the convention, and it is up to them to stop the vampires and find a way to turn Kate back before it is too late.
