The 10 most pirated movies of 2009
The time is here again! When we reduce the past twelve months into a few top 10 lists. Back in September it was looking like DISTRICT 9 would easily become the most pirated movie of the year. Just 24 hours after it had become available on the torrent sites it had been downloaded over a million times! At the time it looked like it would easily beat THE DARK KNIGHT’s 2008 record of seven million, and it did, by over a million, but so did a few others.
Topping the list, perhaps to no one’s surprise, is STAR TREK, the film that was loved by most movie geeks (myself included). THE DARK KNIGHT’s seven million download record was shattered by STAR TREK, which hit a whopping ten million. I’m sure movie studios aren’t going to love that number and the upward trend in downloads.
Movies like TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN and HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE probably weren’t too effected by downloads since each made almost a billion dollars worldwide. BitTorrent concerns me more when it comes to independent filmmakers making movies outside the Hollywood system. So how does the rest of the top 10 look? Read on to find out.
1.) STAR TREK: 10,960,000 downloads
2.) TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN: 10,600,000 downloads
3.) ROCKNROLLA: 9,430,000 downloads
4.) THE HANGOVER: 9,180,000 downloads
5.) TWILIGHT: 8,720,000 downloads
6.) DISTRICT 9: 8,280,000 downloads
7.) HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRICE: 7,930,000 downloads
8.) STATE OF PLAY: 7,440,000 downloads
9.) X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE: 7,200,000 downloads
10.) KNOWING: 6,930,000 downloads
