The Criterion Collection adds films from Hitchcock, John Ford to Hulu Plus
UPDATE: Criterion just added GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS to their page as well. Talk about an addition!
It’s a good day when two of cinema’s most storied icons have films added to an online streaming service.
The Criterion Collection, following a few days after they added 21 films to their Hulu Plus page, have gone out and added five more, two of which are from directors Alfred Hitchcock and John Ford.
First there is Hitchcock’s 1940 thriller, FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT. Hitchcock isn’t new to the Collection, with films like THE LADY VANISHES being some of the first releases in the DVD-era for Criterion. This may not be as great as much of his storied films like REAR WINDOW, PSYCHO or even the aforementioned LADY, but it is an absolutely fantastic thriller, and one of the director’s more underrated classics.
Next there is the John Ford film, THE LONG VOYAGE HOME. Yet another 1940 release, the film stars John Wayne, and is based on the play from Eugene O’Neill, actually, more like four one-act plays from the famous writer. This is a film that I have yet to see, so this is definitely one of the most interesting films to see released onto Criterion’s Hulu Plus page. ersonally, as a huge fan of Ford, I can’t wait to see both the film and what Criterion has in store for it.
Three other films are joining the page as well, including the 1937 film HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT, The Who’s QUADROPHENIA, HOPSCOTCH, and the film BREAKER MORANT (hat tip to CriterionCast's Ryan Gallagher for the heads up).
Head over to Hulu Plus and subscribe to check out all of these, and many, many more.
