Update: it was brought to my attention the synopsis could be fake, but since it's coming from the company releasing the film, I sincerely doubt it.

Update 2: Nu Image has released the official synopsis, which is what's below but shortened incredibly.

Last week when I was at Cannes, I wondered around the market center where companies were trying to sell their movies to distributors and investors. I came across some strange-but-fucking-hilarious posters  - the action adventure POOLBOY starring Danny Trejo and Kevin Soboro being one - but eventually stumbled on information on a film a lot of people have been anticipating: THE EXPENDABLES 2.

At the NU IMAGE market booth was an 8X10 poster artwork for the film; if you flipped it over you would find the detailed synopsis, which includes both the death of a major character and an actor's name missing from the first EXPENDABLES. Since I got this is from NU IMAGE's booth, I'm not sure if this will be the official synopsis released when they start rolling out the viral marketing. This seems to just be for the ones interesting in investing.

THE EXPENDABLES 2 is slated to release August 12th, 2012. The screenplay was written by  David Agosto and Ken Kaufman; Stallone passed up directing and the new director has not been announced at this time.

Spoilers ahead!

I typed all of this out, so if you plan on using this, please source us:

Stallone, Statham, Rourke, Lundgren, Couture and Crews return as hard-edged but  noble mercenaries in the second installment of Sylvester Stallone's old-school action thriller, The Expendables.

As payback for taking out the corrupt CIA agent Monroe (Eric Roberts) in the first Expendables, cagey Agent Church (Bruce Willis) forces the Expendables to do an "easy mission": retrieve a missing CIA package from Gazak, a civil war torn country in Easter Europe.

The easy mission turns deadly when the Expendables are ambushed by a team of ruthless rival mercs, the Sangunaires, competing to get the same package. Tool (Mickey Rourke), the heart and souleof the Expendables, is brutally murdered by Vilain, the leader of the bloodthirsty guns for hire. Still, the Expendables manage to pull of the mission and return with the CIA package, but it's a hollow victory.

As their thoughts turn from grief to revenge, Tool's beautiful young daughter Fiona shows up. Cut from the same stone as her dad, she wants to join the Expendables when they hunt down Vilain and his men. Barney (Stallone) promises her the Expendables will avenge Tool's death, but will not risk putting his best friend's daughter in harm's way.

Fiona, who is young and wile, embarks on her own revenge mission, complicating matters for Barney when she is captured and ransomed by VIlain. Now Barney and the expendables must risk everything to save her, kidnapping CIA Agent Church and pulling off a daring heist of the CIA package they were hired to bring back.

When Agent Church reveals why the CIA package is so valuable to Vilain, the stakes go up even higher. Inside the package are canisters of radioactive cesium which Vilain has been tasked with releasing on the people's uprising that threatens the thirty  year rule of Gazak's vicious dictator, President Dogot.

The Expendables, along with Agent Church, are now faced with an impossible mission: rescue Fiona, foil a dictator's vicious plot to kill scores of innocent people, and avenge the death of one of their own.

What's missing: no Jet Li and Fiona and baddie Vilain casting have yet been found. Since we know Van Damme might be up for a villain role, this could possibly be who he's playing. I championed the first film upon its release, and I'm hoping that will happen with part 2. What are your thoughts on this?

It’s mindless fun. You can’t honestly expect MacBeth with these guys so just sit back and turn off your brain. I, for one, can’t wait.

It sounds a little weak (not that I’m expecting nor desiring a masterpiece in this kind of film), but I’m tired of the tough and gorgeous family member seeking revenge aspect. Stallone should simply stick to what The Expendables is supposed to be: brain-cell-annihilating action with that ’80s tough-guy flare.

I hope Arnold is cast as the head of the Sangunaries. We will see them actually team up with Bruce Willis…squee. Vilain, what a cool name for the villain, who’ll probably be played by Van Damme and the dictator should be played by Chuck Norris.
