THE FIGHTER 2 will happen, according to Mark Wahlberg
Well, I guess that's one way of making a formal announcement. Mark Wahlberg officially announced that THE FIGHTER would get a sequel at the Guys Choice Awards, according to Cinema Blend.
There's been talk of a sequel for a while, but nothing was set in stone. We'll see more of Micky Ward and his dysfunctional family, but don’t expect a plethora of sequels like ROCKY. In Wahlberg’s own words: “We're not going to do FIGHTER 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 but we are going to do 2, and we're going to do the Ward-Gatti trilogy.”
The Ward-Gatti trilogy refers to the three fights between Micky Ward and Arturro Gatti from 2002 to 2003; those fights were excluded from THE FIGHTER so there’d be enough material for another installment. It’s odd to see a character-driven drama like THE FIGHTER get a sequel, but its real-life inspirations have enough fire in them to make for a potentially engaging follow-up.
