The future is now: video-in-print technology
I know this isn't exactly film news, but video is taking over the newsstands! Am I the only one visualizing a giant Godzilla-esque video screen? The CBS Corporation is inserting thousands of small video screens in copies "Entertainment Weekly" in a marketing stunt to promote its fall TV lineup. Seriously, we're like one step away from flying cars and robot housekeepers here!
The small black screens measure 2 inches by 1.5 inches and can play about 40 minutes of video each. The reader/viewer can push a button in the insert that holds the screen and select clips from various CBS shows, as well as an ad for Pepsi (who is also a participant in the promotion).
The insert will appear in a limited run of copies sent to subscribers in New York and Los Angeles. In my opinion, this sounds like cheesy greeting card 2.0, but the implications for film advertisement and promotion are interesting.
