Philippe Falardeau (pictured left, draped in a Montreal Canadiens flag with A DANGEROUS METHOD's Viggo Mortenson) took home some Canadian hardware on Thursday at the 32nd Annual Genie Awards. After missing out on the Best Foreign Language Film (to Iran's A SEPARATION) Academy Award at last month's Oscars, MONSIEUR LAZHAR managed to come out victorious in its home and native land. The French-language film about an unconventional Algerian immigrant who takes over teaching duties in an elementary school class after a teacher commits suicide, won a total of six awards including Best Motion Picture, Achievement in Direction and Adapted Screenplay.

Perennial Genie favourite David Cronenberg saw his film A DANGEROUS METHOD honored with five trophies. The sexually charged costume drama won awards including Best Actor in a Supporting Role award for Viggo Mortenson's performance as Dr. Sigmund Freud, as well as the Best Original Score award for composer Howard Shore.

“The competition was fierce in this vintage year for Canadian film,” said Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television's Interim CEO Helga Stephenson. "The industry is strong, more Canadians are watching Canadian film than ever before and we look forward to more great films from our incredible pool of film talent.”

CAFÉ DE FLORE, director Jean-Marc Vallée's supernatural romance that combined visually stunning backgrounds with epic beats to seamlessly transect dimensions of time and space, initially lead the ceremonies with a staggering 13 nominations but only managed to take home awards in three categories. French superstar Vanessa Paradis won for her  luminous portrayal of a fiercely devoted mother in 1960s Paris who stops at nothing to protect her son, who has Down's Syndrome. Paradis won in one of the more competitive categories of the evening, which also featured nominations for Michelle Willams (TAKE THIS WALTZ) and Rachel Weisz (THE WHISTLEBLOWER).

The Cineplex Golden Reel Award for highest box office gross of a Canadian film was awarded to STARBUCK, a comedy about a loser(ish) man who learns he has fathered 533 children as a result of (a lot of) donated sperm. To date, the film has earned approximately $3.4 million dollars at the domestic box office.
