It appears as though the talking is over.

Disney has announced that their massively talked-about, Gore Verbinski-directed take on The Lone Ranger will be making its way into theaters on December 21. The film will star Armie Hammer as the titular hero, with Johnny Depp taking on the role of his faithful sidekick, Tonto.

The film will be going up against such projects as Ang Lee’s LIFE OF PI, Phillip Noyce’s HUNTER KILLER, and Judd Apatow’s KNOCKED UP spin-off, and just a week after THE HOBBIT, so to say that it’s a bit of a dense release schedule is putting it lightly.

While I’m not quite sure just what type of audience Disney expects to get here given its competition, I do think that this is an interesting date for a film like this to call home. Personally, this is a film that I think could be right at home during the holiday season, and given that it’s a Western, it will be intriguing to see how it plays. What do you think?
