After a long-lasting stay in the realm of kiddie fare, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is set to make a big return to what he made his name in, beating the hell out of people.

With upcoming roles as a prick cop in the upcoming THE OTHER GUYS, and the lead in the revenge thriller FASTER, Johnson has now joined the cast of the long-gestating action film, PROTECTION, according to The Wrap. In the film, penned by Brandon Noonan, Johnson will play a Special Forces agent who has to travel to Mexico to rescue the daughter of a judge, who has been kidnapped. Originally slated to star Paul Walker, the film has seen Clive Owen also attached to it, with Patrick Alessandrin (DISTRICT 13: ULTIMATUM) as the last director attached to the project.

Both Walker and Owen have since left, opening the door for Johnson to walk in and pick up the pieces of this floundering project. However, I can’t help but to be kind of interested in seeing what he can do here. It’s not an uber-insane premise, best summed up as The Rock vs. Gangsters, so it’s not going to be the most thought-provoking film, but Johnson has a strong physical presence and is the closest thing that we have today to a real, Stallone style action star. It will be interesting to see what the hell he still has in the tank after roles in films like THE TOOTH FAIRY.
