I remember the first time I read The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. I was a young lad, fresh into grade school, with big dreams of big movies. Upon reading the short story, I was immediately smitten! I thought to myself, “What a keen idea for a feature!” And then, after doing a little research, I discovered that there was already to be an updated adaptation (one was made prior in 1947 starring Danny Kaye and Boris Karloff) to be made from James Thurber’s tale about a regular Joe who daydreams about fantastical adventures as his wife shops and visits the beauty parlor. If you noticed, I mentioned that I was in high school. I’m now almost 26.

That should give you a clear idea of just how long THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY has been stuck in development hell, bouncing around from studio to studio. The film has had everyone from Jim Carrey to Mike Myers to Owen Wilson to Kevin Anderson attached to star as the titular Mr. Mitty with notable directors like Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Mark Waters (MEAN GIRLS) and Chuck Russell (THE MASK) set to helm at one point.

And that’s not counting the lengthy list of screenwriters! Babaloo Mandel & Lowell Ganz (TOOTH FAIRY), Chuck Russell (THE BLOB), Peter Tolan (ANALYZE THIS), Zach Helm (STRANGER THAN FICTION), Richard LaGravanese (P.S. I LOVE YOU), Jay Kogen (The Simpsons), David Reynolds (FINDING NEMO) and Thomas Lennon & Robert Ben Garant (NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN) have all have taken a stab at this thing with their pen at one point or another.

Add one more name to that list, as The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that scribe Steven Conrad (THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS) has been hired by Fox to write the latest draft of the film. As we recently reported, it has been rumored that an offer is on the table for Sacha Baron Cohen (BORAT) to star. No director is currently attached.

For us longtime fans of Mitty, lets hope that it finally materializes into something more than a daydream now that Conrad is on the job.
