THE WAY BACK getting Oscar-qualifying theatrical release
About as shocking as a musical number coming up on Glee, it appears as though Peter Weir may have a play in the upcoming Oscar race.
According to The Wrap, Weir's latest piece, the Jim Sturgess-starring film THE WAY BACK, will be released into theaters on December 29, making the Oscar qualifying date. The film will then expand into more theaters come 2011, thanks to Exclusive Media Group and Wrekin Hill Entertainment.
The film stars Sturgess, Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Mark Strong, and Saoirse Ronan, and follows a group of prisoners who attempt to escape a Siberian landscape to try to head to India and thus their freedom. The film apparently hit the festival circuit to rather rave reviews, and while the film was originally thought of as a casualty of a distributor who doesn’t quite have the financial backing to promote an Oscar contender, it appears to have finally found a home come late December.
This is one I can’t wait to check out, so here is hoping that we’ll get to see it as soon as possible.
