Tobey Maguire will again join his RIDE WITH THE DEVIL director, as the actor has just signed on for a "bit role" in Ang Lee's LIFE OF PI adaptation.

Maguire's role, which consists only "of several days worth of work," will see him portraying a reporter who interviews the grown-up version of the work's protagonist, the titular Pi. Irrafan Khan will be playing the older Pi, with the coveted role of young Pi already belonging to newcomer Suraj Sharma.

The film, based on Yann Martel's wildly popular novel, follows young Pi "whose passage to a new life in America aboard a freighter ends in a shipwreck in the Pacific. He is left to fend for himself on a life raft with an orangutan, hyena and Bengal tiger." Yes, for anyone not familiar with the book, this is the story of a boy on a life rant with wild animals. And, if the explanation of Maguire's role didn't already spoil the end for you, Pi lives. Commence head-scratching.

Though I am a huge fan of Lee's work, I remain utterly flummoxed as to how this will translate to the screen.

LIFE OF PI is currently shooting in India.
