Tom Cruise is entering final negotiations with Paramount to reprise his role as Ethan Hunt for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4. This would be the next installment in the franchise, four years after MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3 and nearly fifteen years after the original film hit theaters. This next installment would follow the most critically acclaimed entry in the series, though MI:3 had a substantially lower box office gross than the first two films. Its $134 million dollar gross underwhelmed most industry professionals, and a fourth film didn't seem likely until Cruise was confirmed.

Additionally, J.J. Abrams is set to produce the film but will abstain from directing. Abrams, who directed the third film, has a full docket ahead of him, such as directing future STAR TREK films and numerous other projects as a producer. Cruise has finished shooting his next film, KNIGHT AND DAY, in which he will appear alongside Cameron Diaz.

What does this mean for fans of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE? Well, in all likelihood Cruise was the major development roadblock. Now that he's secured and J.J. Abrams is around to produce the film, all that we're waiting on is a director.

Brian De Palma and John Woo, as well as Abrams himself, have directed each of the respective MISSION IMPOSSIBLE films. Out of all three, the third installment is easily my favorite, simply because Abrams brought a fresh take on a very fun action film. The narrative kept me much more involved, and Cruise felt much more "on his game" than in the first two movies. If all goes according to plan and shooting begins late this summer, this could be Cruise's next film with a release sometime next year. Color me excited!
