Tom Cruise set to lead THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN remake
Recently, MGM revealed that a select few of their many classic titles, including RED DAWN and DEATH WISH, were slated for remakes.
Variety is reporting that none other than Tom Cruise is set to star in a new production of one of their select iconic films, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (which is, interestingly enough, a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s SEVEN SAMURAI).
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, along with other classic titles like THE WILD BUNCH, has been bandied about as remake fodder for quite some time. As of this moment, no one else is attached to this particular project. While it does appear to be moving forward, don't get your hopes up for an official release date anytime soon.
I think Cruise is a great choice to lead a film like this; it's possible that THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN may not even be remade as a Western. MGM has been working on this new production for a while, and it wouldn’t be all that shocking if the team decided to update the story for modern audiences. I love Cruise as an actor, and really think that the lead role in a broad action ensemble such as this one could prove a smart fit.
What do you think?
