Earlier this year Natalie Portman reported that she would have a small role in the upcoming adaptation of Cloud Atlas and that the Wachowskis would be writing and co-directing it along with RUN LOLA RUN creator, Tom Tykwer.

And now, according to Deadline, Tom Hanks (who has been connected to the film for some time now) is officially set to star in the film, an adaptation of the novel Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. The film will start production in September.

The novel features six intertwined stories. Deadline's plot description says the novel is "an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution."

The film will be released by Warner Bros. in North America and Focus Features will handle overseas distribution.
