Tom Hooper could direct LES MISERABLES
Fresh off his Oscar nomination and Director’s Guild win for Best Director, Tom Hooper will have some hard decisions to make about his next movie. With so many projects being tossed his way, the world is truly his oyster. Marvel approached him with maybe the highest profile project – he was offered to direct IRON MAN 3. He turned it down, and now that’s been handed to Shane Black (writer of LETHAL WEAPON).
LA Times spoke with someone who works closely with Hooper, and got the scoop that he’s considering an offer to direct LES MISERABLES, a new version of the classic novel and successful Broadway musical. Working Title conceived it as a big-budget musical. From the studio that brought us ATONEMENT, they’ve proven they can beautifully capture period films.
Hooper has not started any new films since THE KING’S SPEECH wrapped about a year ago. Should he accept LES MISERABLES, it would mark his third European film, which started with THE DAMNED UNITED. He previously expressed interest in sticking with historical or period pieces, saying he was on the lookout for something like that when he last spoke to 24 Frames.
