Coming out of the Sundance premiere of his latest film, WIN WIN (see our review here), director Tom McCarthy has not only found himself a fair amount of buzz, but apparently a new project to call his own.

THR is reporting that the writer/director will be leaping out of the indie world, and will pen the upcoming film, MILLION DOLLAR ARM for Disney. The sports film will follow the true story of J.B. Bernstein, who found pitchers Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel during his reality show, of the same name. Both pitchers moved to the states, and are now playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Now, McCarthy did have a credit on Pixar’s UP, but this will be the biggest project he’s done to date, as it will apparently be him and him alone on this screenplay. The film sounds really interesting, and knowing how deft McCarthy is at penning really compelling films, this should be one of the more interesting projects coming down the pipeline. Hopefully it can be the rare sports film that truly transcends the genre. If anyone can do it, McCarthy is your man.
