Tom McCarthy will WIN WIN with wrestling and possibly Paul Giamatti
Tom McCarthy is an actor who's written and directed two of the best indie gems that have come out of Hollywood in the last decade. His first feature, THE STATION AGENT, turned heads and his second, the fantastic and heartbreaking THE VISITOR, gained his actor Richard Jenkins a Best Actor Oscar nomination.
Tom has since been seen on TV ("The Wire'') and has had small roles in movies here and there (BABY MAMA, 2012, THE LOVELY BONES), but now he's gearing up for his third feature, deemed "a light-hearted drama" called WIN WIN. The film is "about how a rough-and-tumble runaway changes the lives of a suburban New Jersey family and turns around the luck of a high school wrestling team." This is reported to reflect on McCarthy's real life high school days.
McCarthy has opened a casting call, and even scouted a New Jersey high school looking for an unknown to play the lead.
"I'm looking for a real kid, wrestling experience is a plus,'' McCarthy said from the bleachers at the Madison High gym. "Someone with an edge — Kyle [the runaway] is a quiet, tense young man with a tough past.''
The film will be "loosely based on the friendship between him and former wrestling teammate Joe Tiboni, of New Providence, who McCarthy joked was a 'below average' wrestler."
Paul Giamatti's role is unclear, but if you see the photo below (courtesy of My Jersey Central), Giamatti was at the wrestling matches McCarthy attended during his scouting. The Playlist said it best with "...we assume [Paul] is going to have a role in this as well (we're guessing as the team coach)."
