TOP GUN sequel more likely than ever?
It was just this past week that myself, John Mulhern, and Josh Brunsting got into a lengthy discussion surrounding the best films of Tom Cruise. What was originally intended to be a twenty minute conversation turned into an hour long discussion about the power of movie stars and separating the personal lives of actors from their work. We spent a good chunk of that time talking about TOP GUN, for which I have a deep passionate love.
Naturally, I was a bit confused when I heard about a sequel being increasingly possible. If you're as curious as I am, hit the jump for the full story.
Apparently, Jerry Bruckheimer told MTV...
"We tried to develop [a sequel] and we couldn't do it-- I was with my partner Don Simpson," Bruckheimer explained. "And then Tom took it over and he tried to develop something and it never quite happened." That's all in the past though. It turns out that "Top Gun" has been the subject of much more recent sequel discussions as well.
"We were recently approached again to start talking about it but, you know, nothing yet," he continued. "We kicked around some ideas because the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it."
Well, there you have it.
I can't tell you how many times I've seen TOP GUN. As I mentioned on the GATW podcast, my dad spent 20+ years in the Air Force. For him, his friends, and by extension myself, it was a sort of wish fulfillment movie. It was pretty much everything guys in that era wanted. It's so unbelievably American, which is one of the many things that make it great.
As for a sequel, I can't see how they could capture the magic of the original movie. We live in a very different world. In the 1980's, when TOP GUN first came out, the Cold War was still raging. Our technology had a purpose and that purpose was to defeat the Russians. Our contemporary enemies can't be fought with overwhelming technology. Our enemies don't have planes for us to dogfight with. If Bruckheimer and his crew can develop a script based on the world today, I'd be pretty impressed.
Hopefully, if this sequel ever happens, my awesome aviator sunglasses will finally be back in style.
