TOY STORY characters coming back for CARS 2
With this weekend’s release of TOY STORY 3, many of us have come to terms with the fact that this will more than likely be the last time we see the gang of Woody, Buzz, Rex, Hamm, and the rest of Andy’s righthand toys on the big screen.
However, we are wrong, at least to an extent. According to an interview with MSN Movies, Lee Unkrich knows something a little different:
“Well, I really tried my best to end the story of Andy and his toys and bring that story to a close in a really nice way at the end of this film. That being said, we know that people love the characters, love Woody and Buzz, and would hate to say good-bye to them completely. I don’t know that there would ever be a [TOY STORY 4]. We don’t have any plans for one — but we are trying to find ways to keep the characters alive. We have announced we’re going to do a short film in front of CARS 2 that uses the TOY STORY characters. We’re going to keep them alive; they’re not going away forever.”
While I’ve been openly gushing about the effects that this series (and the final film in particular) have had on me both emotionally and cinematically, the one thing above any and all that makes TOY STORY 3 one of Pixar’s best (and the best of the franchise), is that it’s a perfect cap to the series as a whole. The final scenes are so pitch-perfect, both narratively and tonally, that the idea of seeing them come back to the big screen is really wonderful.
Sure, the film ended on a high note, but if there has ever been a series of both films and characters that could take the most from a short film, it’s the toys from TOY STORY. They have both a narrative and comedic style that is very reminiscent of earlier shorts from the likes of Disney and Warner Bros. so, overall, while I would have loved to see the film end on that note, as I’ve said before of the film, these toys and films will live forever.
