It's no secret that we love Orcinus orca around this here cinematic sea, along with the rest of their blubbered brethren in the order Cetacea. That's the scientific name for the order of whale for those of you that were not aware (I knew. Because I looked it up on Wikipedia). So, anytime movies and whales tread the same water, we feel it is our duty as both lovers of the art and the animal to bring it to the surface.

THE WHALE, a documentary executive produced by Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds and narrated by Reynolds himself, tells the story of a lonely young orca named Luna who gets separated from his family and begins to become friendly in the Nootka Sound with the residents of nearby Vancouver Island. But no one could foresee the great debate that would soon arise out of this amazing story between mammals and marine mammal, as people become torn over their love for the whale versus how human contact might hinder him from surviving on his own.

For fans of THE COVE and other touching nature documentaries with a porpoise, you'll definitely want to check this one out when it swims into theaters late summer/early fall. For now, you can check out the trailer after the break!
