Trailer for PRETTY BIRD soars but it’s going straight to DVD?
Unfortunately, with the state of the economy and the reliance of Hollywood on big budget blockbuster features, smaller independent flicks often get left behind. Last year it happened to a relatively well received Sundance film, THE VICIOUS KIND which had the star power of Brittany Snow, Adam Scott, and JK Simmons. Despite those names, the movie went straight to DVD. This year, we've got another.
PRETTY BIRD, which stars Paul Giamatti, Billy Crudup, and Kristen Wiig, is headed to DVD without a theatrical release. Head over to First Showing to watch the trailer and go after the break to hear some thoughts.
PRETTY BIRD came out of Sundance back in 2008. It garnered some middling reviews, but almost everyone agreed that the performances of the actors were worth the price of admission. Giamatti is a world class actor whose work ranges from the surreal to the ultra-real. His versatility in the world of cinema is admirable at the least, though his work seems to have been less than profitable lately. His last few films, COLD SOULS, THE LAST STATION, and LADY IN THE WATER, haven't garnered much of a box office gross and direct-to-DVD films rarely make a profit.
Billy Crudup shares some of the same characteristics. His work as Hoover in PUBLIC ENEMIES and as Dr. Manhattan in WATCHMEN have given him more mainstream recognition, though his role in PRETTY BIRD appears quite different than the aforementioned roles. Finally, Kristen Wiig should have been enough to convince buyers. Her work on SNL is hilarious and should have given the movie that much needed name recognition. But, alas, the film is doomed to the DVD market.
So, what do you think of the trailer? Just from the trailer, it appears to deserve a Netflix rental at the very least. Regardless, PRETTY BIRD comes to DVD on June 29th.
