While I’m quite a fan of Julie Taymor, particularly her works like ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and TITUS, the lack of buzz coming out of festival screenings for her latest film, the Shakespeare adaptation THE TEMPEST, is disheartening.

However, I still hold out hope that where ACROSS THE UNIVERSE didn’t quite hit the mark with everyone, this film can be the visual masterpiece that we’ve all be waiting to see from one of the more singular names in the world of film.

That said, we now have the first trailer for the hotly anticipated film, and I must say, it’s a mixed bag. I definitely dig her visual style, which seems to be only amped up to 11 with this film, which appears to have amazing effects and stunning cinematography. That said, the trailer did nothing to make me any more interested in the project, which has apparently found rather middling reviews coming out of festival screenings. It does have one hell of a cast, top lined by Helen Mirren, Alan Cumming, Djimon Hounsou, and Alfred Molina, but it’s hard to get excited for a film that appears to be a visual feast, but little more. Check it out for yourself after the break!

Make up your mind for yourself when this film hits theaters on December 10.
