Tyler Perry to take over Morgan Freeman role in I, ALEX CROSS
Good for you, Tyler Perry. I was beginning to think that those Madea movies were going to be the next Ernest series. MADEA GOES TO CAMP, MADEA RIDES AGAIN. I know those movies are cash cows, but I for one am happy to see you "stepping your game up," as they say.
How does Tyler Perry plan to increase his game, you ask? By reprising the role of Alex Cross, previously played by Morgan Freeman in KISS THE GIRLS and ALONG CAME A SPIDER. The film, based on the Alex Cross series of books written by James Patterson, will be directed by Rob Cohen. Cohen is the director behind popular franchises XXX and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS.
Deadline reports that the Alex Cross reboot was originally conceived for actor Idris Elba. There's no official word on what happened there. As much as I'm glad to see Tyler Perry breaking out of his own written and directed by material, I can say that this seems like an odd choice to me. Perry became a hit with his Madea character and I am not so sure he can pull off the detective/psychologist role last played by Morgan Freeman. Freeman has a presence and calm demeanor that I've never seen from Perry. This most certainly will be a challenge, but I can commend a man who has a system that works for him, and is still up for taking a risk.
The film is being produced by QED International, who brought us THE PERFECT GETAWAY and DISTRICT 9.
