UPDATE: Emma Stone officially being offered role of MJ in SPIDER-MAN?
Just yesterday, we brought you a story about a few of the flame-headed firecrackers and blonde bombshells that Sony was reportedly considering for both Mary Jane Watson, high school crush turned love interest to Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Gwen Stacy, other love interest to Peter Parker/Spider-Man. That list included Dianna Agron (Glee), Mia Wasikowska (ALICE IN WONDERLAND), Dominique McElligott (MOON), and the obvious best choice...Emma Stone (ZOMBIELAND, SUPERBAD).
Now Deadline is reporting that the studio will in fact go with Stone as the actress that gets to tell Andrew Garfield to "Go get 'em, tiger" in Marc Webb's (500 DAYS OF SUMMER) adolescent reboot. This leaves those other ladies still on the list for Gwen Stacy, a character who, according to The Amazing Spider-Man mythos, Parker doesn't meet until college. If Sony does in fact offer the role to Stone, I hope it tingles her Spidey sense. She embodies the role both physically and personality-wise, able to dually play sexy and the girl next door in one fail swoop (Exhibit A: EASY A), sporting the signature red hair and the spunky attitude to boot. Two things that go hand in hand (trust this guy...he's married to a red head). Two things that Kirsten Dunst never had.
Granted, the comics paint MJ out to be a bit more voluptuous and overtly sexy than what Stone generally plays. But I consider that due to the characters we've seen her regularly portray in the past - I.E. the somewhat tomboyish but cute best friend or girl next door. Yet, a quick experiment involving a Google Image search and "Emma Stone" should prove that she can pull off the sultry look to match Stone's pitch perfect personality that the character calls for. Not to mention the fact that, from everything we've heard, this SPIDER-MAN will be more Ultimate Spider-Man and less of the classic Amazing or Spectactular. Considering that, Stone is a better fit over, say an actress like Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) who represents the traditional and more mature image of MJ that we naturally gravitate towards.
What do you think? Is Stone a good fit for Mary Jane Watson? Or is there an actress you fancy more for the role?
