Update: Well would you look at that! Mark Ruffalo just confirmed to The Playlist that they are indeed shooting another short scene tonight that would end up in the theatrical release. Ruffalo was quoted as saying, "We’re shooting a scene tonight. I’m not sure exactly where it’s gonna go. All I know is that someone came in with the costume and said, 'Here’s some wardrobe. We don’t know where you’re going to be or what you’re doing.' "
With THE AVENGERS having just had its world premiere, one that I was lucky enough to attend, and its theaterical release only a few weeks away, it would seem unlikely that they're still letting cameras roll. However, Robert Downey Jr. dropped the bombshell at the press conference today, saying they were actually going to shoot one last scene tonight and then closed off with "No more questions!" It got everyone buzzing and speculating on what it could possibly be or if it could even be true.
However, this excitement was short-lived. After Robert Downey, Jr. and the other male superheroes left the stage, it was time for a press conference with Joss Whedon, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston, and Clark Gregg. It wasn't long before RDJ's comment was brought up and instead of giving a cryptic answer, Joss Whedon seemed pretty confident that they were done filming. And if anyone were to know, he would be the man for that.
But once a rumor is out there, sometimes there is no stopping it. The guys over at /Film have an interesting theory should they actually be filming something tonight. Edgar Wright tweeted earlier that he had just filmed something that he couldn't yet talk about, and now with this tidbit they're speculating that it could be a post-credit scene that ties into the next Marvel movie - CAPTAIN AMERICA 2, AVENGERS 2, or maybe even a new property like ANT-MAN.
While totally plausible, I think RDJ was just pulling our legs. THE AVENGERS screened this week and already included a post-credit moment. It played after the animated credits, but before the scrolling full credits. Marvel does have a track record of having scenes after the full credits, they had the CAPTAIN AMERICA scene in this exact spot. Maybe they realized the majority of moviegoers don't stick around for nearly 10 minutes to see all of the scrolling credits for just a 30 second spot.
Do you think they could still be shooting AVENGERS? Share your thoughts in the comments.
