Updates: Gosling not doing THE LONE RANGER; Gillespie to helm PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES

It's time for everybody's favorite type of news! Confirm or deny news! Things that were true but now are not, things that were in the air and now are on the ground, things that remind us to take some of our more bizarre news with a heady dose of common sense and a grain of salt.

Though the story spread like wildfire last Friday (our story here), Entertainment Weekly now reports that Ryan Gosling is not on deck to join THE LONE RANGER film with Johnny Depp. It was reported last week that Gosling was "in talks" to join the Gore Verbinski-directed film, a long-gestating take on the classic television show.

However, the story from EW does not completely debunk Gosling's interest in the film, as their story notes that "reports of the talks, however, were premature, as Gosling’s schedule was not yet firmed up." That means that, though Gosling has seemingly dodged a bullet most people were not too excited about, we can still all wonder why he would have even gotten in firing range to begin with.

In other update news, Deadline is confirming that the rumors that Craig Gillespie would helm the upcoming PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES adaptation are indeed true.

It was reported weeks ago (our story here) that Gillespie (best known for LARS AND THE REAL GIRL and his upcoming FRIGHT NIGHT remake) would most likely be taking over the director's chair vacated by Mike White, but now things are written in blood (augh, zombies, blood, brains). The film is still looking for a cast, so expect news on that to start trickling out.

Gillespie is an interesting choice for the role. LARS is a great film, both funny and emotional, filled with tonal balances that I can't imagine fitting into the ham-fisted humor (is it?) that made up Seth Grahame-Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The initial word on FRIGHT NIGHT has not been very positive, so I worry that this is yet another buzzy genre pick for a director whose talent seems to exceed his choices. Of course, casting will play a huge part in this film, so I will stop with the downbeat thoughts until that information is revealed.

What do you think? Who would you like to see in THE LONE RANGER? Who are your picks for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES?
