VLAD will be less about vampirism, and more about holy war

I recently told you all that Summit was making another vampire film, named VLAD. Unfortunately, I was misinformed. Summit is making a film called VLAD, and it is about the man behind the myth of the vampire, but the film will be absolutely void of anything vampiric. Sorry to disappoint those of you that wanted to see a harder and harsher TWILIGHT, but this change in story could be really good news. Instead of a movie about a supernatural blood-sucking monster, we will instead be treated to an epic that includes holy war (Christian versus Muslim), family betrayal, and an intimate study of humanity. Sound good? Check out what the author of the script, Charlie Hunnam, has to say about the film-to-be.

"As the script stands now, we don’t touch on vampirism. That was my one non-negotiable area when we were developing it, and thankfully, nobody suggested that we should delve into it at the end. But you can clearly see the things that Bram Stoker took…Vlad was such a brutal man, and the trick is to make him sympathetic. That was the challenge, and if we’ve succeeded in any way in this script, I truly believe that it’s genuinely making him sympathetic. He was doing what he thought was right. He was the one who was being invaded and whose religious beliefs were being stripped away. Vlad met the Sultan three times in battle through the course of his life and at any time he meant him, he was outnumbered 5 to 1. A lot of his brutality just came out of military necessity — shock tactics and fear tactics to give him the upper hand, because he just couldn’t meet them man-to-man."

As you read that last part, and if you think like me, than you will notice that this story has a sort of BRAVEHEART ring to it. Well, that was on purpose. In fact, Hunnam says that the story has a mixed bag of both BRAVEHEART and 300 elements. Sounds like a good war film to me.

This film is quickly shaping up to be an exciting and challenging project. I cannot wait to see what comes about, and definitely look forward to sharing more with you all once more news surfaces. If you want to read more about what Charlie Hunnam has to say about this film, then check out the full interview HERE. I would highly recommend it. The true historical story of Vlad is unbelievable, and Hunnam will definitely make you a true believer in this project. Plus, he talks about who he would consider for the lead role.
