On December 26, 2004, an earthquake struck the Indian Ocean, triggering a series of tsunamis that devastated Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. The resulting death toll checked in at just under 300,000, making it the deadliest tsunami in recorded history.

Enter Juan Antonio Bayona, directed of the stellar supernatural thriller THE ORPHANAGE, and his new film THE IMPOSSIBLE. Starring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, the film follows a family on vacation in Thailand that happens to coincide with one of the worst natural disasters in history. Although the trailer is dubbed in Spanish (despite being an English-language film), THE IMPOSSIBLE appears to be a strong departure from the obvious horror of THE ORPHANAGE, preferring instead to focus on a very real catastrophe and the horrors the very real terror that comes with it.

Check out the teaser trailer and new international trailer after the jump.

Despite the language barrier with the trailer, the film looks absolutely incredible. This really comes as no surprise, however, as Bayona has proven himself to be a filmmaker with an incredible eye for suspense; it doesn't deal with the supernatural, but there's no denying the fear that radiates throughout much of the trailer.
