WB working on new take of “Count Of Monte Cristo;” Radar Pictures working on “Hearts Of Darkness”

Nothing says perfect fodder for a futuristic adventure quite like two classic novels.

First up, Variety is reporting that WB is set to bring us a future-based take on the classic Alexandre Dumas novel, The Count Of Monte Cristo. The film is being spearheaded by SPLINTER scribe Ian Shorr, with GANGSTER SQUAD producer Kevin McCormick aboard to bring this one to the big screen.

For those who don’t know, the story follows a young man sent, wrongly, to prison, who seeks revenge on those who put him in the clink.  They aren’t the only ones working on a new take on a classic book.  Variety also reports that Radar Pictures is backing a new take on Joseph Conrad’s Heart Of Darkness. The film is being helmed by THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT director Peter Cornwell, and will, of course, be set in the future, and in space.

Personally, I think both of these films, given the right creative team, could be really great.  A revenge tale like Count is such an intriguing project to put into the future, and nothing says “future story” quite like a space war project.  Overall, while it does seem a bit odd, there is so much room here to make a really special film.  What do you think?
